Despite the inclement weather, the Cagayan State University (CSU) Carig Campus successfully hosted on October 19 the first ever Campus English Challenge (CEC) that included four contested speech and communication activities.Students, instructors and professors packed the contest venues to witness this event highlighted by the students’ performances in the jazz chant competition, reader’s theater, theme relay, and debate tournament.
Six colleges participated in in this activity co-sponsored by the Office of the Campus Executive Officer, CSU Carig Campus Student Government (CSG), and Carig Debate Society (CDS). They are the College of Public Administration (CPA), College of Human Kinetics (CHK), College of Information and Computer Sciences (CICS), College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), College of Industrial Technology (CIT), and College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), the event organizer.
Based on the official result, CICS won first place in the jazz chant contest, CAS in second place, and CHK in the third. CHK dominated the reader’s theater tilt, placing CVM and CICS in the second and third rank, respectively.
In the theme relay, a contest integrating the four macro skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing, CAS triumphed over the other competitors when the judges invited declared the college over-all champion in reading, speaking, and writing. CHK and CIT placed second, while CPA and CICS ended third.
In the debate tournament which adopted the British Parliamentary Format, CAS emerged champion after besting teams from CPA, CHK, and CICS. In the final round, CAS defeated CICS on the motion, “This house believes that the Philippines must agree to ‘prisoners-swapping’ with China.”
The judges invited by the organizers led by Dr. Ian Roger M. Francisco included Prof. Eduardo Balubal (University of Cagayan Valley), Prof. Lizel Nadal (CSU Andrews), Prof. Loida Calonia (CSU Andrews), for Jazz Chant and Reader;s Theater; Dr. Laureana Lingan (CSU Andrews), Dr. Ferdinand Cortez (University of Saint Louis Tuguegarao), and Prof. Calonia, for Theme Relay; Prof. Salvador Battung (CSU Andrews), Prof. Amir Aquino (Florencio Vargas College), Prof. Richmond Jay Tumaneng (CSU Sanchez Mira), and Mr. Peter Addu Pagunuran ( University of Cagayan Valley) for the debate tournament.
