UST PROFESSOR DEFENDS DOCTORAL DISSERTATION
2009-03-18 - VPAA

Prof. Herminigildo Ranera of the University Of Santo Tomas Conservatory Of Music presented and defended his doctoral submission to the university on the "UST Music Summer Camp". The Panel of Oral Examiners consisted of Fr. Ranhilio Callangan Aquino, Vice-President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Eleuterio de Leon, Dean of the Graduate School, Dr. Margarita Babaran, Dean of Instruction, Dr. Edith Pagulayan, Deputy Dean of Instruction and Dr. Tomasa Iringan, Dean of the College of Education. Prof. Ranera introduced his topic by relating the summer camp program of UST to similar endeavors around the world and in the Southeast Asian region pointing out the fact that UST alone offers the summer camp in the Philippines. He argued from a theoretical framework that makes social and cultural values important input for the program and identifies exposure of students and faculty members to the countryside, as well as accessibility of professional music education as the output of the endeavor. He presented the history of the music camp and then discussed aspects such as logistics and financing. He analyzed the program by identifying its strengths, weakness, opportunities and threats and finally made recommendations, among which were the democratization of the planning process, the institutionalization of the program and establishing more stable funding. After a two hour presentation and examination session, the panel awarded him the grade of 96.5 or Outstanding. Prof Raner will graduate on April 2, at 4:00 in the afternoon with all the graduates of the university.
