In a significant move to enhance and broaden the scope of the Sanchez Mira Campus coconut-based niche program, the Cagayan State University (CSU) has formally inked a strategic partnership with the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) and Sanchez Mira Coconut Tall Farmers’ Association, Inc. (SMCTFA, Inc.) yesterday, December 28, 2023, at CSU-Sanchez Mira Campus.
The momentous signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with PCA was attended by President Urdujah G. Alvarado, graced by PCA Area Manager, Ms. Princess Claire Abing, who represented PCA Administrator Bernie F. Cruz and PCA Regional Manager III Dennis D. Andres, and witnessed by Campus Executive Officer Dr. Rodel Francisco T. Alegado.
The MOA delineates the establishment of a 7.0-hectare Coconut Model Farm in the CSU-SM old site, known as Sitio Nagbarangan, planned for the upcoming year. This initiative aims to address the needs of coconut farmers for high-quality planting materials. By fostering collaborations with them, the partnership seeks to achieve production-market integration, ultimately benefiting coconut farmers.
This collaborative effort is well-aligned with PCA's ongoing implementation of the Seed Farm Development Project (SFDP), which will serve as a vital source of seed nuts and seedlings in the near future, supporting the sustained coconut planting and replanting program of the authority.
Simultaneously, CSU formalized its partnership with SMCTFA, Inc., with Mr. Manolito Bonifacio B. Leonador, serving as the President and signatory of the agreement authorized by President Alvarado along with the witnesses CEO Alegado and Mr. Jeffrey A. Ramiro, the association treasurer, which aims to fortify the implementation of various programs, projects, and activities promoting the development of associations, livelihood, entrepreneurship, trade, and skills development. These efforts will be facilitated through the university's Extension and Community Development Services.
Under this collaboration, CSU commits to provide technology adoption, training programs, and technical assistance, specifically tailored to coconut-related initiatives, benefitting both urban and rural populations, particularly those in need. This holistic approach signifies a commitment to not only advance educational and agricultural opportunities but also contribute to the sustainable development of local communities.
