SENATOR ANGARA'S BARKADA LEAGUE SEASON 2 KICKS OFF WITH 270 CSU SCHOLAR PLAYERS

Two hundred seventy-two (272) student-scholars from various satellite campuses of Cagayan State University (CSU) participated in the kickoff of Senator Angara’s Barkada League 2024 Season 2 which commenced on Monday, March 4, 2024, held at the grounds of CSU Gonzaga campus.

>Dr. Arthur G. Ibañez, the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) President of CSU, officially opened the sports fest, marking the beginning of the three-day youth sports and camaraderie.

In his address, Dr. Arthur G. Ibañez extended his appreciation to Senator Sonny Angara for his commendable efforts in authoring and sponsoring various acts for the youth and for the country’s work force, health and medicine, women empowerment, Sangguniang Kabataan support, sports and many others. “This dedication and commitment of the good senator in promoting the development of the young generation will surely create a significant impact on their lives,” the OIC President said.

Dr. Ibañez also expressed his gratitude to the Senator for “strengthening this community through sports, fostering unity in the midst of diversity, and instilling in our students the spirit of belongingness, of pride in victories and humility in defeat.”

Approximately one thousand CSUans warmly welcomed the guests and speakers with their colorful, energetic and flawless cultural dance presentation displaying the talents of the Cagayano youth and the rich culture of Cagayan. Representatives from the offices of Senator Angara and Senator Pia Cayetano, Mr. Niño Nuñez and Mr. Gene Pahati, expressed gratitude to CSU for hosting the event and emphasized the importance of sportsmanship. They highlighted the true spirit of sportsmanship - fair play, team work and mutual respect for one another.

Also present are Mr. Dondon Collado, executive assistant of Hon. Marilyn Pentecostes, VP Mariden Cauilan who delivered an opening remarks, VP Junel Guzman, VP Teresita Dimalanta, Campus Executive Officers - Engr. Roger Rumpon (Carig), Mr. Ramon Henri Peregrino Kanapi (Andrews), Engr. Policarpio Mabborang Jr. (Lal-lo), Dr. Audy Quebral (Aparri), Dr. Florante Victor Balatico (Lasam), Dr. Hitler Dangatan (Piat), Dr. Rodel Francisco Alegado (Sanchez Mira), and Dr. Ma. Haidee Mabborang (Solana).

Delegates from different campuses of CSU, along with their coaches and Office of Student Development and Welfare (OSDW) and sports coordinators, participated in four exciting games – badminton, basketball, volleyball, and sepak takraw. CSU Piat emerged as the champion in men's badminton, while Carig claimed the top spot in the women's category. In basketball, CSU Sanchez Mira secured the championship title, followed by Lal-lo and Gonzaga. Sanchez Mira also excelled in sepak takraw, with Lal-lo and Gonzaga taking top positions. CSU Lal-lo emerged victorious in volleyball, with Lasam and Carig securing the second and third positions.

Cash prizes were awarded to the winners, with champions receiving P10,000 and runners-up getting P7,000 and P5,000, respectively. Additionally, P5,000 was awarded to the badminton champion, with P3,000 and P2,000 for first and second runners-up.

CSU celebrated the first Angara Cup in 2019 to promote camaraderie and unity among Senator Angara's student-scholars through sports. Since 2017, Senator Angara has provided scholarship opportunities for CSU students, regardless of their course or year level, to support financially challenged students. Each semester, scholars receive P7,500 to alleviate their financial burdens and pursue their academic goals.

Currently, there are 342 scholars this school year who are enjoying financial benefits from the Angara Scholarships - eighty-three (83) is from Andrews, forty-one (41) from Aparri, sixty-eight (68) from Carig, thirty-two (32) from Gonzaga, twenty-five (25) from Lal-lo, twenty (20) from Lasam, thirty-four (34) from Piat, and thirty-nine (39) from Sanchez Mira.
