Ballesteros, Cagayan — In a joint effort to promote sustainable agriculture, livelihood generation, and local economic development, Cagayan State University – Lasam Campus and the Local Government Unit of Ballesteros formally launched the Cacao Production and Processing Program through a tree-growing activity held on June 16, 2026.

The initiative, which seeks to establish cacao farming as a viable livelihood, promote sustainable farming practices, and boost the local economy, commenced with the planting of 150 cacao seedlings by university and campus officials, local government representatives, faculty members, and community stakeholders.

During the opening program, CSU Lasam Campus Executive Officer Dr. Florante Victor M. Balatico, emphasized that the partnership extends beyond a one-time engagement and is geared toward creating lasting developmental impacts in the community.

“Ang commitment po natin ay long term, hindi one-shot deal. Ang gusto po natin ay developmental, makikita po natin ang impact ng project,” Dr. Balatico said.

Meanwhile, Ballesteros Mayor Hon. Robert H. Ogalino, emphasized the significance of cacao production in generating livelihood opportunities and strengthening the economy of the municipality.

“Kayat kayo nga hikayaten nu ana ti importansiya ti cacao iti panagbiag tayo. Han laeng nga mangted employment ken kwarta, no di ket papigsaen na pay ti ekonomiya ti ili tayo,” Mayor Ogalino said.

In his message of commitment, Officer-in-Charge University President Dr. Arthur G. Ibañez expressed the university's continued support for initiatives that empower local communities through research, extension, and innovation-driven programs.

Beyond the ceremonial planting activity, the program is expected to expand through a series of cacao education and demonstration workshops, skills training on cacao farming, and a cacao product creation contest
